Some roofers like the rain- it’s a day off! But we are not enjoying it at Olde World Slate Service. We have so many jobs on the books, and repeated days of rain mean that jobs have to be rescheduled and backed into later jobs. There are also many new customers whose roofs we need to evaluate in the next 2 weeks, and those appointments must be postponed as well. Even a slow drizzle that wets the roof usually makes it unsafe to work.
But we try our best to schedule work so that our customers are not too inconvenienced by bad weather. For example, when we book jobs that are more than 3 weeks out, we plan empty days into the weekly schedule. That way, if we have 4 or 5 days of bad weather in those 3 weeks, we have some empty days in which to put postponed jobs!
But oh, on Sunday evenings we like to see a week’s forecast with good weather! That means we can plan on getting jobs finished every single day!
Our office in Cockeysville has been without electricity all week, thanks to Hurricane Irene on 8/27/11. But with cell phones and laptops being charged in the work vehicles, it hasn’t affected our business too much.
After our area received so much intense rain, we waited to see if any of the roof work Olde World Slate had done in previous weeks developed problems. But all the work we have done recently has held up to those strong winds and driving rain! We are proud of the work that our Amish roofers do; the job is done right and watertight the first time!
It can be frustrating, how dependent the roofing trade is on the weather forecast! In the summer, if it’s not extreme heat, then it’s rain. Our crews were steadfastly working in the 3-digit temps last week. They finished installing a black rubber flat roof that increased the heat by probably 10-20 degrees! Frequent breaks kept everyone hydrated. Today, the high chance of thunderstorms may take them off slate jobs by 1pm…
Let’s face it, roofing contractors have been known to do business dishonestly. Olde World Slate Service LLC was formed with the idea that homeowners should have a better option. With this in mind, and with no intention of bashing the competition, allow us to explain some things to look out for when dealing with slate roofers and roofers in general.

…Before you select a roofing company
Find out if the company is properly licensed.
And the phrase “Licensed and Insured” isn’t necessarily proof! By Maryland law, a home improvement company owner must pass a written test and prove financial solvency before being issued a license. Once licensed, the company is required to post their license number (MHIC #) on their work vehicles. Licensing is for your (as homeowner) protection. [ read more ]
