February 29, 2024Slate is a type of natural stone that is quarried directly from the earth. Different slate varieties have different durability levels. For example, on average Buckingham slate has a 400-year life expectancy. By contrast, Pennsylvania Gray/Black slates, quarried mid-century, has an 80-year life expectancy. If your slate roof is not new, its remaining lifespan is also related to how well the roof has been maintained over the years. Even on a 400-year roof, slates can become broken by foot traffic, falling tree branches, or even snow weight. If your roof is original to your home and you know when your home was built, we will identify the type of slate upon inspection, tell you its average lifespan, and let you know how much maintenance it has had over the years.
